Two questions come up more than any others about free SENA training: “Am I eligible?” and “Is the certificate actually worth anything?” This article answers both, and explains how the whole system fits together — so you know what you are signing up for before you start.
Who can apply?
Eligibility depends on the level of the course, and this is where most confusion lives.
- Short complementary courses. These are the most open. They are designed for a wide audience and generally ask only for basic prerequisites — being old enough, having basic literacy, and internet access. This is the natural starting point for most people.
- Technical programmes. These usually require around ninth grade completed. They go deeper than complementary courses and carry more weight.
- Technologist programmes. These typically require completed high school and Saber 11 results. They are the most demanding tier and the closest to a full qualification.
Always confirm the exact requirement on the individual course page in Betowa, since specifics can vary by programme and intake. Our enrolment guide, “How to Enrol Step by Step,” shows where to find that.

How the training is delivered
Once enrolled, you study inside Zajuna, SENA’s virtual classroom. There you work through materials and activities and stay in contact with an instructor. Most virtual courses are self-paced within the programme’s timeframe, which is what makes them workable around a job or family. The three-platform structure — Betowa to enrol, Zajuna to study, Sofía Plus for records and certificates — is explained in full on our complete guide page.
The certificate: what it really is
This is the part that matters most, so let us be precise. A SENA certificate earned online is:
- The same legal validity as one earned in person. Online delivery does not make it a lesser document.
- Digitally signed and QR-coded. It carries an electronic signature and a QR authenticity code.
- Verifiable online. It can be checked directly in Sofía Plus, so an employer can confirm it is genuine in seconds.
That verifiability is the entire reason the certificate is useful. Anyone can produce a good-looking PDF; what makes a qualification credible is that a third party can independently confirm it. That is what a SENA certificate gives you.

How long until it is issued — and what it costs
For short virtual courses, the certificate is usually available within a few days to a few weeks after you finish and pass. Technical and technologist programmes take longer simply because they are much larger. Either way, downloading it is free, like every other part of the process — there is no charge to enrol, to study, to sit assessments, or to get certified. The Colombian State funds it all.
A reality check on “guarantees”
No honest programme can promise you a job, and neither can we. What free SENA training offers is a legitimate, verifiable credential and real skills — the rest depends on how you use them. Be especially wary of any third-party site that promises a “guaranteed” certificate or place in exchange for money; the official process never charges, and the certificate is only meaningful if it comes through SENA’s own system.
The bottom line
Eligibility scales with the level: short courses are open to almost everyone, while technical and technologist tracks ask for more schooling. The payoff is a free, digitally signed, verifiable certificate with full legal validity, issued through Sofía Plus.
