The single most important thing to understand about Spain’s free training system is what you walk away with. Two courses can both be free and both be online, yet one hands you a simple diploma and the other an officially recognized qualification. This guide explains the requirements and, crucially, the value of the certificate at the end.
Who is eligible
Eligibility is set course by course in the official convocatoria, but the recurring factors are:
- Employment status — unemployed job seekers, employed workers, or both, depending on the program.
- Region of residence — many calls are limited to residents of a specific autonomous community.
- Prior qualifications — most short courses have no academic prerequisite, but higher-level certificados de profesionalidad may require a minimum education level or an entry test.
- Priority groups — women, long-term unemployed, young people and people with disabilities are sometimes prioritized.

This distinction decides how useful your training will be on a CV.

Certificate of completion (diploma de aprovechamiento)
Issued by the training center, it confirms you completed a course and, often, passed its assessment. It is useful evidence of a skill, but it is not a nationally standardized qualification.
Certificado de profesionalidad
This is the official one. Linked to Spain’s national catalogue of professional qualifications and administered within the SEPE framework, it certifies competence to a recognized standard, is valid across the whole country, and can be required to work in certain regulated roles. These are structured into levels 1, 2 and 3, and higher levels demand corresponding prior education.
What "free" really means
Free means the participant does not pay tuition. The cost is covered by public and European funds and, in the case of FUNDAE, by contributions companies already make. Be cautious with any offer that asks for a fee to "reserve" a subsidized place; legitimate public training does not work that way.

Passing an online course
Online and blended courses usually set minimum requirements to pass: a percentage of connection time, completed activities, and sometimes a final test. Because places are publicly funded and limited, centers monitor participation. Meeting these requirements is what converts your enrolment into an actual certificate.
How to verify a certificate’s value
