Groceries and fuel are the two bills that never take a month off. A card that pays back more on both can offset a real part of your monthly costs.
We compared three grocery and gas credit cards in Canada, using only the rates each issuer publishes on its official page.
Key takeaways
- Grocery rewards run from 4% at most grocery stores to 1% inside the Costco warehouse. Where you shop decides the winner.
- Two of the three cards charge a $120 annual fee, waived in the first year.
- Purchase rates run from 20.99% to 21.99%, so paying in full every month matters more than the reward rate.
- Income minimums differ widely: from $15,000 to $80,000 personal income.

1. Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite+
The broadest grocery reward in this list. It pays 4% at grocery stores in general, not at one chain.
At a glance
- Rewards: 4% cash back on groceries and recurring bill payments; 2% on gas, EV charging, transit, rideshare and food delivery; 1% on everything else. Each accelerated rate applies up to $25,000 in annual spending.
- Cost: $120 annual fee, waived for the first year on cards issued between July 2 and November 1, 2026. Purchase rate 20.99%; cash advance rate 22.99%.
- Welcome offer: 15% cash back on all purchases for the first 3 months, on up to $2,000 in purchases.
- Extras: up to 7¢/L in value at Shell stations with a linked card, and a 0% introductory rate on balance transfers for 12 months (2% fee).
- Income: Scotiabank lists income or asset minimums starting at $60,000 personal income.
Pros and cons
- 4% works at most grocery stores, so you can shop wherever prices are best.
- Recurring bills like phone and insurance also earn 4%.
- The $120 annual fee returns from year two.
- Merchant categories are set by the Visa network, so some big-box stores may not code as grocery.
How to apply
Apply online or in a branch. You’ll answer questions about your job, income and address. Check that your spending in the 4% and 2% categories covers the fee before year two.

How to choose

Do the math before paying a fee
A $120 fee needs about $3,000 a year of 4% grocery spending just to break even. Our list of budgeting apps that help tariff-proof your finances can show where your money actually goes. If you often carry a balance, a low-interest or balance transfer card will save more than any reward rate.
Grocery card checklist
- Add up 3 months of grocery and fuel receipts.
- Check which stores you use most, and which card family they belong to.
- Compare the yearly reward with the annual fee after year one.
- Set automatic payment of the full statement balance.
- Review your categories once a year.
Paying in full matters because federally regulated financial institutions must give you at least 21 days interest-free on new purchases, but not on cash advances or balance transfers, according to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada. How we compared these cards
- Sources: only each issuer’s official product page or rate summary. Every offer was checked on September 23, 2026.
- Criteria: grocery and gas reward rates, caps, annual fee, purchase interest rate, income requirement and welcome offer.
- Order: listed from the best fit for most households down, based on how widely the grocery reward applies.
- Left out: the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard. Its official page could not be loaded for verification on the check date, so we did not publish its numbers.
- Independence: no issuer paid for placement.
