In Chile, free vocational training is a real, established public service. The Servicio Nacional de Capacitacion y Empleo, better known as Sence, is the state agency responsible for funding and coordinating training so that workers, jobseekers and people re-entering the labour market can build skills at no cost. Sence (Servicio Nacional de Capacitacion y Empleo) is part of the Ministerio del Trabajo y Prevision Social. Its job is to help people find work and stay employable by funding capacitacion – vocational training – across the country. A large share of this training is delivered online and completely free to the person taking it, because the cost is covered by the state and, in some programmes, by employers through tax incentives. In practice, that means you can access structured courses that would normally cost money without paying anything yourself.

What kind of training is available
The catalogue is broad and changes over time, but it typically covers areas where Chilean employers are hiring. You will find courses grouped around themes such as:
- Office and administration – spreadsheets, word processing, basic accounting and customer service.
- Digital and technology – digital literacy, e-commerce, social media, and, through initiatives like Talento Digital para Chile, more advanced paths such as programming and data.

Training is delivered by registered technical training bodies known as OTEC (Organismo Tecnico de Capacitacion), which Sence oversees. Some courses are fully self-paced e-learning; others are live online classes on a schedule. Both usually end with an assessment and a certificate of completion that proves you finished the programme.
